I wanted to write a quick article regarding Apple’s Approved List of Virtual Currencies. It appears that they are not very forthcoming online when researching what type of crypto currencies they allow. Their guidelines website states: (e.g. Bitcoin, DogeCoin) and that is it.
IOTA is the revolutionary new CryptoCurrency built on Tangle. A blockless distributed ledger which is scalable, lightweight and for the first time ever makes it possible to transfer value without any fees.
The app we created was rejected due to: 3. 1.5 Business: Payments – Physical Goods or Services Outside of the App. Which according to the apple guidelines is:
If your app enables people to purchase goods or services that will be consumed outside of the app, you must use purchase methods other than in-app purchase to collect those payments, such as Apple Pay or traditional credit card entry. Apps may facilitate transmission of approved virtual currencies (e.g. Bitcoin, DogeCoin) provided that they do so in compliance with all state and federal laws for the territories in which the app functions.
We submitted an appeal asking for more information and also pointed out that there were several other apps on the store that allowed IOTA Transfer etc.. Why was ours being excluded.
Their reply was:
We work hard to ensure that the apps on the App Store are in compliance, and we try to identify any apps currently on the App Store that may not be. It takes time to identify these occurrences, but another app being out of compliance is not a reason for your app to be.
Clearly, this appeal was not going to go anywhere. We then sent a reply to them asking for a list of approved currencies and they said we would get a phone call.
During the phone call we asked if there was a definitive list online that could be checked but at the moment there is not. As of the date of publishing, Here is the complete and official list of Apple’s Approved Virtual Currencies:
